Amid rising regional tensions, Bangladesh has withdrawn from an important proposal made to India. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has rejected New Delhi’s request to use Bangladeshi territory to provide “bandwidth transit” facilities aimed at strengthening mobile internet connectivity in India’s northeastern states.
According to a report by Anandabazar Patrika, the decision was taken in line with directives from the interim government, which has decided to discontinue granting such transit facilities. Bandwidth refers to the capacity to transmit data per second and plays a crucial role in determining internet speed.
A source within the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated that approving this type of transit could potentially weaken Bangladesh’s strategic position as a regional digital hub. This concern prompted the rejection of the proposal. In this regard, the BTRC issued an official directive on December 1.
