Chinese researchers have developed an advanced laser-based imaging system that has been described as one of the world’s most powerful surveillance cameras. Reports say the technology uses synthetic-aperture lidar and could potentially achieve extremely detailed observations from long distances, including identifying or scrutinizing objects in orbit.
However, the viral claim that this camera can reliably perform facial recognition of people from space should be treated carefully. The available reporting describes experimental high-resolution imaging capabilities, not a demonstrated system that can routinely identify individual faces from orbit.
China is also rapidly expanding its space-based monitoring capabilities, including new satellite constellations equipped with AI-assisted detection, high-resolution imaging and object-recognition technologies.
