China’s luxury automaker Hongqi has tested an ultra-fast EV battery that charges from 10% to 70% in just 3 minutes and 41 seconds, reaching 97% in a little over 8 minutes.
Developed with China Automotive New Energy Battery Technology (CNET), the prototype uses a 12C charging rate, a custom electrolyte and a carbon-coated anode to reduce internal resistance by 15%.
During testing, the battery pack maintained a temperature difference of less than 3°C, helping protect battery health.
If commercialised, it would outperform BYD’s latest Blade Battery, which takes about 5 minutes to charge from 10% to 70%.
The battery is still a prototype with no production timeline, but it could significantly reduce EV charging times in the future.
