সূর্য সেন 1894 সালের 22 মার্চ চট্টগ্রামের রাউজান থানার নোয়াপাড়ায় দক্ষিণ রাঢ়ী কায়স্থ পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। সূর্য সেন ছেলেবেলা থেকেই খুব মনোযোগী ও ভাল ছাত্র ছিলেন।

1918 সালে তিনি মুর্শিদাবাদের বহরমপুর কৃষ্ণনাথ কলেজ থেকে বি.এ পাশ করেন এবং চট্টগ্রামে ফিরে এসে ব্রাহ্ম সমাজের প্রধান আচার্য্য হরিশ দত্তের জাতীয় স্কুলে শিক্ষকতা শুরু করেন।

অসহযোগ আন্দোলনের সময় বিদ্যালয়টি বন্ধ হয়ে গেলে তিনি দেওয়ানবাজারে বিশিষ্ট উকিল অন্নদা চৌধুরী প্রতিষ্ঠিত অধুনালুপ্ত 'উমাতারা উচ্চ ইংরেজি বিদ্যালয়ে' অঙ্কের শিক্ষক হিসেবে যোগ দেন। এসময় বিপ্লবী দলের সাথে তাঁর সম্পর্ক গভীরতর হয়ে ওঠে এবং শিক্ষকতা করার কারণে তিনি 'মাস্টারদা' হিসেবে পরিচিত হন।

বিপ্লবী ভাবধারায় দীক্ষিত সূর্য সেন দেশের স্বাধীনতার জন্য আত্মত্যাগকে একমাত্র তপস্যা হিসেবে নিয়েছিলেন। 1916 সালে মুর্শিদাবাদের বহররমপুর কৃষ্ণনাথ কলেজের ছাত্র থাকাকালীন সময়ে সূর্য সেন সরাসরি রাজনৈতিক দলের সাথে যুক্ত হন।

বিভিন্ন বৈপ্লবিক কর্মকান্ডের পরে সর্বশেষ 18 এপ্রিল 1930 সালে মাস্টার দা এবং তাঁর বিপ্লবী দল চট্টগ্রাম অস্ত্রাগার লুন্ঠন করেন। এই আক্রমণে অংশ নেওয়া বিপ্পবীরা দামপাড়া পুলিশ লাইনে সমবেত হয়ে জাতীয় পতাকা উত্তোলন করেন। সূর্য সেন অস্থায়ী বিপ্লবী সরকার গঠনের ঘোষণা দেন। চট্টগ্রাম সম্পূর্ণরুপে ব্রিটিশ শাসন থেকে মুক্ত ছিল চারদিন।

ইংরেজ প্রশাসন সূর্য সেনকে জীবিত অথবা মৃত অবস্থায় ধরার জন্য সর্বাত্মক চেষ্টা অব্যাহত রাখে। 1933 সালের 16ই ফেব্রুয়ারি রাতে অস্ত্রসহ সূর্য সেন এবং ব্রজেন সেন ধরা পড়েন।

1934 সালের 12ই জানুয়ারি মধ্যরাতে সূর্য সেনের ফাঁসী কার্যকর হবার কথা উল্লেখ করা হয়। সূর্য সেনকে ব্রিটিশ সেনারা নির্মম ভাবে অত্যাচার করে। ব্রিটিশরা হাতুড়ী দিয়ে তার দাঁত ভেঙ্গে দেয় এবং তাঁর হাড় ও ভেঙ্গে দেয়। হাতুড়ী দিয়ে নির্মম ভাবে পিটিয়ে অত্যাচার করা হয়। এরপর তিনি অজ্ঞান হয়ে যান। নিষ্ঠুরভাবে তাঁর অর্ধমৃতদেহ দুটি ফাঁসিতে ঝুলিয়ে দেওয়া হয়।

মাস্টারদা সূর্য সেনের এই আত্মবলিদান ভারতের ইতিহাসে স্বর্ণাক্ষরে লেখা আছে এবং ভবিষ্যতেও থাকবে। তাঁর সম্মানে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে একটি করে আবাসিক হলের নামকরণ করা হয়। এছাড়া কলকাতা মেট্রো, সূর্য সেনের স্মরণে বাঁশদ্রোণী মেট্রো স্টেশনটির নামকরণ করেছে মাস্টারদা সূর্য সেন মেট্রো স্টেশন।
